The Animals Observatory

Always with a notebook and a pencil in her hand. She looks for inspiration in the world around her and then moves it on blank pages creating the incredible world of The Animals Observatory.

The Animals Observatory

Where did the name of the brand come from?

Children watch adults trying to work out the rules of the world and of life and, as such, we adults resemble animals in the zoo of life. The brand name is based on that idea.

Describe the The Animals Observatory brand in 3 words.

Authentic, free and beautiful.

What inspires you to create?

Beauty, definitely. It's what drives me. And we can find beauty in any scene from John Cassavetes' films, in a graphic design piece and even in the moment a child tries to scramble up onto the stairs for first time. The way you look at something is as important as what you’re looking at.

Tell us more about your team.

I’m blessed to have them. As creative director I do expect a lot, but I’m also appreciative. I work with a small team of people on both product and campaign design. The longer we work together, the more acquainted we become, and they continue to surprise my each and every day. I feel very fortunate; it’s a privilege and a joy.

As a team, what is your dream goal?

The Animals Observatory is any creative director’s ultimate dream. I have all the freedom in the world and a brilliant, close-knit team. I think that comes through in our products and in our brand image as well. My goal, therefore, is to keep growing together and creating beautiful works of art.

Which stage in creating a new collection is the most exciting and fascinating for you?

The very beginning, when I open my notebook and am faced with a blank page. It’s a time of doubts mixed in equal parts with excitement and enthusiasm. I especially enjoy coming up with the colour palette. The harmony between colours is something I’m particularly passionate about.

What are your favourite pieces from the current SS19 collection?

I can’t single out any one piece, I’m sorry. But I can say that I’m very proud of the way the collection as a whole has turned out.

Are your childhood memories reflected in your collections?

Absolutely. I still work the same way I did when I was a child: with a notebook and coloured pencils. I love to draw. I was always drawing as a child. Just like now.

The Animals Observatory

What/who inspires you the most throughout the entire creative process? (You can list a group of people, places etc.)

Living in the countryside surrounded by nature, no doubt about it. It inspires me and helps promote a really productive, creative and focused frame of mind. Also, occasional trips to New York, Paris or Madrid. These are cities I really like and that inspire me. That’s the list in terms of places. As for people, my children are very important because they are my crack team of critics. Watching them grow is also a source of inspiration because I have a better understanding of their needs and how their tastes evolve. Then there is my husband, Felipe Cano, who is the brand’s artistic director. During our long conversations, he brings up countless references for films, books, art and music, which are a gold mine for me.

Why do you think Polish customers have fallen in love with The Animals Observatory?

That's a great question and I’d love to have the answer! I’d like to think they love the brand because of its authenticity, beauty, comfort and quality.
