At only a dozen years old, Nordin decided to take matters into his own hands. Using available materials and simple tools, he started working on a new backpack design in the basement of his family home. His idea was simple: to create a backpack that was comfortable for the spine, spacious and durable. The inspiration came from traditional Swedish backpacks with a wooden frame, but these needed some improvements. After much trial and error, Åke created a prototype that became a breakthrough.

The reactions from those around him were extremely positive. Soon Åke realised that his backpack could help many people, so he decided to take a risk and start production on a larger scale. In 1960, FJÄLLRÄVEN was founded, with the name referring to the Arctic fox, symbolising resourcefulness and survival in difficult conditions.
